Our Dali

Yesterday afternoon, Sammie cat and I lost our Dali. She was my partner for 14 years. She will live in my heart forever. She will be cremated and she will be coming back to France with us when it's time. We miss you so much my Dal. But, what a life she had and what a life we had together!

Bird Bells, Basil and...

...layers of yellow everywhere. We are slowly coming together out in and around the garden. As pretty as that yellow is...I'm very grateful it isn't growing on my fence or roof. That Cat's Claw is pretty poison. It grabs in to the roof and fence and destroys everything it touches. I've seen many homes in New Orleans fade away under its seeming charms.

 

 

                                     I'll take pretty yellow gerber daisies...

A Special Creole Osceola

 

Sunday's parade of the Creole Osceola's had me sitting or squatting at the edge of the median right there at Broad Street and Columbus. I had my eye on this young man, who saw me taking this photo. In a flash, with a huge smile on his face, we had him good...again. As he turned to run up Broad, I shouted: "Great costume, I know how much work that is!" He turned back again, with that amazing smile and said: "You're sure right about that M'am!" Then he, and the parade moved on.

 

And the Parade Came to Me

Sunday afternoon...chained to the computer writing final exams and project proposals, the sun had come out after violent nightime and morning storms. I looked out my window and saw the police across the street. I went out to look...maybe a funeral, maybe a problem...maybe a parade!

 

And for me, the best kind. This was a group of the Mardi Gras Indians, the Creole Osceolas!

 

All I had to do was cross Broad Street, park my behind on the grassy median, et voila. The parade came to me. Only in New Orleans!

Change Over Day

Where's a drum roll when you need it? The new LLBean backpack was delivered by UPS to Columbus Street yesterday. What a treat...all the reasons I loved my purple backpack for 20 years with a few improvements. You'll find reflecting materials on the straps now, velcro on the inside small pocket to protect all the important stuff you don't want rolling around, and a tiny hole in the top of the same compartment so the earphone connection to your (I guess)-Ipad can be tucked safely inside and you are handsfree, still enjoying your music! That last one isn't important to me, but hey, I'm a dinosaur.

My friends in France have marveled for years that I get so much in this backpack. I never realized until I went to order this new one, that these are school book bags. It now makes sense why they are also exceptional for hauling groceries, etc. I'm sure we'll be making more backpack memories together, but for today...the teacher will be arriving at "school" on her grape jelly bike, sporting her brand new, LLBean, ice blue Sac à Dos...a new era has begun!
