Even with our two days off this week for winter weather here in New Orleans, I'd bet that the chances of seeing these snowy St. Louis scenes on Columbus Street are slim to none. But then again, you never know.
By Monday evening, I knew that I wasn't going to have to get to Tulane to teach on Tuesday. I'd already prepped for my morning class and was about to move on to the afternoon class...now, both are going to require re-thinking and replanning with Tuesday's missed material.
Oh, I spent a little time pondering, but quickly decided this might be the day to have some fun with my photos and try out Kat's match box project. This is what I discovered: sizing the adhesive paper is a challenge; smoothing it nicely over the match box can be tricky too; especially, because smoothing over lettering can lead to botching and smearing; and, it helps to take the matches out of the box, flatten it and use the edge as a guide to keep your photo straight. All that said, I discovered that an exacto knife was invaluable as a tool of last resort just in case the photo size wasn't "perfect" or you found a few little cardboard loose edges somewhere. I haven't moved on to anything other than match enclosures yet. I'm actually thinking photo themed gift packages. I'll keep you posted.
The cold continues. I have a new weather concept to add to my vocabulary: "ice pellets". I have a couple of appointments today, and then I'll just see what the rest of today brings.
What better way to showcase Kat's latest project, than with her own photo above of her most recent decorated match boxes.
Two arrived for me in my weekend goodie box: an artistic W.C. Handy Stamp on a box full of beautiful stamps, and our favorite cedar tree in the Cadrieu cemetery full of matches. We've been talking match box lately: size of adhesives, pros and cons to bigger vs. smaller match boxes, and then what about the contents? You really can be as creative as you want; turning them into a special jack-in-the-box kind of pop-out gift all its own, storing stamps, matches, special change, a sweet, private message to a loved one...the list goes on and on. What might you store in your magic match box?
My sister Kat is so talented, creative and thoughtful. It makes no difference if it's cards, bookmarks ornaments, photo-family garlands, a New Orleans word melange, votive led candles, or another something special that I will surprise you with tomorrow...her work is meticulous, beautiful, and always brings a smile to my face.
A sweet box full of goodies arrived on Columbus Street yesterday. I knew she'd been at work on a number of new projects. It was a box of sweet surprises in more ways than one. Treasures Everywhere! Happy Sunday-See you back tomorrow with MORE!
I didn't realize it till I got up this morning and decided to pull out my French Press instead of using the usual big dripper...I had a coffee kind of Christmas this year. I had the cups from Michel, Godiva Coffee and frother from Kat, and my own choice of this sweet little French Press machine for a change of coffee pace.
Most mornings, there isn't enough time for a leisurely cup of French Press coffee. It's a little longer process and a little messier with a longer clean up time, but today with nowhere I had to go...I savored every moment. All I can say is the smoothness was heavenly! Happy Friday, holiday ahas, and celebrate...
Although much of my reflecting happens in my photography; I try to sit back and reflect regularly on my life, times, behavior and patterns.
While I was journaling the other day, I was smacked by the fact that since we'd returned from France I had not included any of my photos in my journals...fourteen months with no photos, when I included them regularly while we were living in France. I'm still reflecting on this discovery.
After having a difficult conversation with a friend yesterday, I'd been given cause to reflect more. Living this flexible life is a dangle dance, but a dance that also gives me choices and opportunities to respond to what may be happening all over the world. Even though I want to be in France, there are reasons to be in New Orleans and now there are more reasons to be in St. Louis. I like to nest. I like to be settled. All that is difficult when three locations are calling me for different reasons.
My friend Stuart used to say: "Laury, when one door closes another will open. I know. I'm right. I've seen it!" He was so sure. He always made me smile. Upon reflection once more, Stu was right. Having one door close has forced me to think creatively and look out of the box.
Another door is cracked. I'm about to stick my foot in and poke my nose through. Today, I'm feeling the excitement of new views and new opportunities.
Feeling the fireworks of surprise and shock this morning...wondering what to do next with very short notice. I'm going to get to see how resourceful and creative I really am. At the moment, I'm very grateful I'm an early bird.
