There's always something happening in New Orleans. Yesterday was a biggie for us. We were voting for Mayor, Council, Criminal Sheriff and a couple of other races, and the new Whole Foods Market Broad Street was hosting a neighborhood event prior to Tuesday's grand opening.
Out on my bike by 10, I headed over to cast my vote and then headed back across Esplanade to make my ride down Columbus to the Circle Food Store. This was my first visit back since their grand opening, and it was just as satisfying the second time around. Fresh boiled shrimp, Louisiana Catfish Filets, other necessities and treats for Sam and I was off on my bike and home in 15 minutes. I know that my $40 would have been $60 at some of the other stores around. The Circle Food Store is my big-shop grocery store of choice.
Home and groceries put away-Eric and Stew arrived to carry me with them to the Whole Foods Market Broad Street Event. The DJ set the tone, eats galore, fun, photos, and learning about healthy eating, growing and living. Sushi, hot dogs, chicken, sausage, salads, fancy desserts, king cakes...you really didn't need to eat anymore the rest of the day.
I've gone from having one major grocery store to two major grocery stores that are about a mile bike ride away; to now, having two more major grocery stores that are an easy half mile bike ride from home. It is going to be interesting to see what shopping patterns unfold. I already know what mine will be. One thing is for sure, with so many choices so close, there will be fewer bus trips to Walmart in my grocery shopping future.
Politically, it was an interesting day. The incumbent, Mayor Mitch Landrieu was re-elected outright and it looks like we will have a run-off for Criminal Sheriff between incumbent Marlin Gusman and the former Criminal Sheriff, Charles C. Foti. Let the shopping and political games begin!
