Although the Picasso Exhibit pulled me to the Musee de Monmartre, I found the greatest joy in discovering the history of Monmartre in this oldest building on the Butte and exploring the Renoir Gardens.
The Renoir Gardens were planted in honor of the artist Auguste Renoir, who lived here from 1875 to 1877.
According to the brochure, "during his stay he painted some of his most famous works such as le Bal du Moulin de la Galette ("The Moulin de la Galette Ball") and La Balancoire ("The Swing"). Wandering the gardens, many of the spots where these works were painted are noted and described.
As much as I love Montmartre, it is incredible that this is the first time I found and visited this museum. As I gazed down upon the Vineyards of Montmartre, the Lapin Agile and other surroundings; I realized that I've been circling this spot for years but never landed.
This is part of the wonder and joy of Paris...always new discoveries!
