I've been trying really hard to find a photo with everyone in my nuclear family together. This is as close as I can come, and we're still missing my brother-in-law Tom, and Mom and Dad, and all of you who I count as my chosen family.
This photo was taken at 411 when Tom and Adrianne and I were evacuated to Ferguson after Hurricane Katrina in 2005. Here, Tom and Adrianne were getting ready to head south back to New Orleans. Dali and I would follow about a week later into October when it was announced that my zipcode could return to the City. We were heading into the unknown. We had no idea what we would find. We had no idea what was ahead. We supported each other.
Now we are experiencing similar feelings for a different reason. In that, we stand together. I am grateful for my nuclear and chosen families. We are stronger together, and none of us will face these unknowns alone.
