Were I not the kind of traveler that I am, yesterday's "fly-by" to the Women's March in DC would have been much more daunting and difficult for me. Part of it is that I try to: plan well; travel light; and, do my damndest to be prepared for what could possibly happen and be unforeseen, if I hadn't given it a little extra thought in advance. I laughed when I picked up my friend, Jane Jurik's email this morning. Her question:
"Where do you get the stamina?"
As much as I can say that all of the items I mentioned above were part of making my "fly-by" work; the biggest factor is that I already have experience in this kind of travel. The lightbulb went off as I was making my plans back in November: "This really isn't any different than the international travel that I have to do to get home on a regular basis." I have my "day in Paris" and now I would have my "day in DC". Thirty-five or so hours of "being on the road" isn't unusual for me. I have learned to: push through; do whatever I need to do to make it work; be ready to be flexible; and, don't let the problems get the best of me. Hey, that train strike in France in 1996 gave me Tarascon sur Ariege and a whole new appreciation for rural France.
Today, I'm home and grateful. I'd planned well. I met lots of interesting people. I did some favorite things. And so, even when nasty weather (not totally unlike Nasty Women) threatened to leave me stranded in Charlotte when all I wanted to do was get home and not have to spend another night in the airport; I soldiered on through. I pulled an OJ in Charlotte and made it to the gate by the skin of my teeth. But, I'd already decided that if I didn't make it-it would be a hotel for me.
One night of airport hanging out and trying to sleep is one thing, I'm getting way too old for two. And, no more booking the last flight out of anywhere so I can be stuck without a back up!
Join me tomorrow for more photos and favorites from the Women's March on DC.
Happy Sunday!
Thanks, Susan...they'll be dribbling in each day along with the story of my "Day in DC"...I loved seeing what was happening in Shreveport! Love, Laury
