Two advertised "Vide Greniers" (empty attic) bookended my time of no connectivity. Thursday a week ago in Cajarc, and yesterday in Grealou. Jane is my major partner in crime. I don't usually do these things, but there is so much that I need that it can be fun to wander and see what I might find.
Of course, there are the little silly things that make me smile that I must bring home with me. But, I need those smiles too.
That Thursday, Jane and I made a day of it in Cajarc. Or, maybe it just felt that way because we were out at 8 and just kept going until 2 or 3 in the afternoon. Jane found the dishdrainer she needed. I scooped a beautiful handmade Indian quilt that came with a metal elephant hook that I'd admired. I also picked up a replica of a caned bench that I had to have. The woman selling them had caned them herself. I saw "doll seat" written all over it, but so far it hasn't seen a doll. I'm discovering lots of other creative uses for what I thought was my frivolity!
Yesterday's in Grealou was huge. Jane has a system and I tend to just follow behind. We found some amazing buys and ran into lots of friends. Finding a chair that was almost the exact replica of one I lost in the fire made my day. I'd have been content with that, but then there was the lace table cloth. I thought I was done.
We sat down for a beer before we went inside for the portion that benefited the Grealou School. There was so much that it was overwhelming. Big kid that I am, there was a very interesting stuffed rooster who called my name and did come home with me. He is a big smile. I scooped some glassware and a small piece of furniture that I fell in love with.
We had quite a day and a lot of fun. I am a bit confused though. It seems to me that the vide greniers that are sponsored by each village throughout spring and summer are turning into more of a brocante. There is clearly a range of quality of pieces offered, but there seems to be a leaning to more brocante quality.
Oh well, it's fun and when you need so much it's wonderful. I'm particular. I don't want to just fill the Chatette up again. I only want things that I love and truly need...even if the need is for a big smile or two. I resisted a gorgeous piece of old farm equipment that still grinds the corn. It seemed the perfect piece for under the staircase and quite a conversation starter. It was big, heavy and would have needed some sprucing up.
As we loaded up the car with our goodies, I told Jane I was still thinking about it. She told me that it had been here for sale at the school every year for the last few years. So, I decided that if it's still here next year, it's meant to be and I'll buy it then!
Here is your mission, should you choose to accept it!
How much money do you think I spent for the items below in the photo? Which piece do you think was most expensive? Which piece do you think was least expensive?
Happy Empty Attic Monday!
