More Than Just the Playground

The Olive A. Stallings Playground is only 2 blocks from my house on Columbus Street. Having lived in this neighborhood since 1980, I don't remember a time when there weren't problems associated with the park.

The neighborhood flyer talked about other issues of concern, but it was made very clear at the start of Tuesday night's meeting, and throughout, that this meeting was only about:

Capital Improvements to Stallings Playground

The City people were on a mission...full speed ahead...blinders on...get all of us in attendance to take the provided list and prioritize the projects with our top 5-(I gave them 10 for good measure.) There was a sizeable crowd, but not just for the park. The looming return of a corner store that brought more crime, drugs, booze and more guns into the neighborhood was a concern, as well as the overall safety of the park for our neighborhood children.

Although neighbors tried, those issues were NOT up for discussion. Oh, there will be another meeting. But a golden opportunity was missed on Tuesday night...movers and shakers from all over the city, NORD, NOPD, Mayor's Office, the City Council, were all represented. It seemed that BOTH could have been accomplished on Tuesday night.

The City walked away with their information to put their priorities for Capital Improvements together. I wonder if we will hear what the results were? The neighbors walked away with a lot more questions than answers, and just one more meeting on the horizon to attend to really address safety issues beyond capital improvements to the playground.

Of course, this is a complicated issue. I learned a lot from my neighbors that night. Knowing there was even more to learn, I stopped in to visit on the porch with some across the street neighbors who were there too. This is far from over. Stay tuned.

Walking the Walk

Throughout last semester's Theories of Social Change class, we regularly talked about how we could get involved in our community. I shared, that since I'd returned from France, I really wanted to do more. At the time, I didn't know what more was. Over the weekend, I found a flyer on my door for a meeting of the Fairgrounds Triangle Neighborhood Association. The meeting was last night. I was glad I attended, but now the work begins. Back with more tomorrow.

Humor Or?

Over these many endless months, since Dad fell last October; he has come to know wheel chairs well. First, there was the "Gerry Chair", this huge thing that was important in the beginning if your blood pressure should drop. It had a back like a lounge chair, and you could lower it any time you needed to. (Having pushed that sucker for the first doctors appointment, it was a monster.) Not too long after arrival, Dad moved on to a traditional wheel chair-for which we were all grateful. Since Mom and Dad moved to Assisted Living, Dad now has his very own wheel chair.

Dad continues to work very hard in physical therapy. He'd love to shed that wheel chair for more regular walker use, but he's still working on that. While I was in St. Louis, he wheeled over to the window so he could show me the brand name on the back of his wheel chair..."Quickie"! It could be cute. It could be humorous. But, whether it's a "quickie" or not really depends on its passenger. Add in the double entendre that "quickie" also denotes; I'd have to ask just how sensitive it is from very many perspectives?

It made me laugh, but I don't have to sit in it and use it every day. What do you think?

Being Clear, Or?

Loving New Orleans, loving the French Market and loving books as I do; I couldn't resist taking a photo of the sign on this book vendors table. He really needs a "so there" at the end of his diatribe, and maybe the sound of raspberries like Gilda Radner used to make at the end of her Edith Anne skits. The shame of it for me, was that I was so focused on his sign that I missed that Chopin book peeking out in the corner. Is he clear enough? Or, is he just contenious? I wonder, do you think he still gets the questions that accompany those answers. I have the picture in my mind of the inquisitve customer, who just gets a finger...pointing to the sign.

A Reason to Journal

With journaling workshops on the horizon in New Orleans and France, that may or may not happen; I continue to see the gift that journaling has been in my life. Of course, there are many 'in the moment' benefits. But, I find re-reading from time to time lends perspective and reminds me of the natural flow to our lives that we can lose when we are so wrapped up in busy, loss, and sadness.

Workshop Success

Yesterday afternoon's workshop: SOAR to Success in Clinical Supervision-Measuring Success With Our Supervisees, went very well. I've learned from having small groups in France, that participants enjoy more intimate settings and feel more comfortable asking questions and participating in activities. One of the nicest things about yesterday, was that everyone learned from each other.

We're up again on Saturday, June 8, with Ethics in the morning and Clinical Supervision in the afternoon; There's still room for a couple more people. Hope to see you there.

My wise and learned co-presenter, Sammie, did not join us for yesterday's event. But, as you can see from the shot below...she was even more exhausted than I was!

Ethics and Clinical Supervision

This Saturday, May 25, kicks off a series of Saturdays throughout the summer, when I'll be offering "Social Work Ethics in Changing Times" in the mornings from 8:30-noon, and "SOAR to Success in Clinical Supervision" in the afternoons from 1:00-4:30pm. The charge for each workshop is $90, but if you come for both, the fee is reduced to $165 for the two and a light lunch is provided.

Stress Reactions

Everyone handles stress differently. Journaling has been my healthiest response to stress. If I'm honest, I'd have to add in retail therapy, Auntie Anne's Pretzels, and as of this last trip to St. Louis...Krispy Creme Donuts! Back in New Orleans, I am now struggling with Krispy Creme Recovery!
