Sometimes you learn a lot by just being in a place. One of our beside the park neighbors made the best (and easiest) suggestion at that meeting last week that I'd heard all night long. He said: "We need to be a presence in the park."
I happened to pass by his porch on my bike on my way home that night. I stopped to thank him, and learned the names of 3 more of my neighbors.
The pool at Stallings Playground has been open this week. I went over yesterday on my bike and found a bench to sit on beside the Playspace. I pulled out my book and my journal and just busied myself with my own stuff. Pretty soon, all the girls in the Playspace came over to talk to me. They: asked about my journal, looked at my book "Half the Sky", wanted to know if I was going swimming, and told me their names.
It looks like I have a swim date for Friday sometime.
