"Another Country-Navigating the Emotional Terrain of Our Elders" seems to be with me at every turn in my days these days. Dr. Pipher comments that our Elders most want our time. I'm finding that to be true with my parents and friends.
Lately, I am finding my "elder" friends feeling compromised when I call on the phone. I have a habit of giving friends a call when I'm in the neighborhood on my bike, to see if they are up for a visit. Yesterday was the second time in as many weeks that my friend on the other end of the line said: "Oh, I'm not doing very well today, Laury." I let them know I'm close by and make sure to ask if they are up for a vist. They always say yes, come on over, but just for a little while. I always say: "I tell you what, I'll come over, give you a hug, tell you I love you, and then be on my way." It usually ends up being a little more than that. They are happy to see me...happy for a little company...and, I'm always glad I called and stopped by.
