Sitting around the dinner table with my friends last night, it was wonderful to all be together in New Orleans. Three of the four of us are facing elder issues and so the conversation went. I shared Dr. Pipher's concept of the young old and the old old. We agreed that we are all pretty much at, or almost at, young old. We talked a little about old old and what may lie ahead for the four of us, recognizing that there is just no way to know. I realized on my bike ride home, and again this morning, that the four of us are ahead of the game. We are resilient.
In her chapter entitled: "Let a Thousand Old Flowers Bloom: Resiliency", Dr. Pipher describes the resilient old in many ways: copers, able to carry on in spite of losses, practicle, sensible, appreciators, and finding pleasure in small moments. There are many more and I could go on, but just these few painted a picture of the four of us. It makes no difference if we're sitting on my terrace in the Lot, or around the table at Stew and Eric's in New Orleans: Stew, Eric, Denise and I have a lot to look forward to together.
