When I think of waves, this is the variety that comes to mind. They: can be so pretty and graceful, gently touch the shore, and if you're lucky, tickle your toes. I've recently begun describing paper grading in terms of waves. I'm not quite sure how this happened, but in each of the three classes I'm teaching, papers are due at the same time. It's also scheduled so that one set is finished and another set rolls in. It looks like I will be grading papers continuously into December. The papers roll in. The papers roll out. Another set of papers is right behind...and there's no end in sight. It's one wave at a time for me. These waves don't tickle my toes. On a good day, the authors tickle my imagination and give me hope for our future.
