Last weekend, it was an email on Sunday. This weekend, it was an early Saturday morning telephone call. My friend, Sister Ann Roddy, SSND, passed away in the wee hours of the morning. Sister Ann and I first met, through our work in HIV/AIDS. We became friends on a corner of Jackson Square, where you would find her painting (until the last couple years) most days. I was in the Quarter often. I'd always stop and say hello. It became part of my regular routine. I loved to sit with her and chat while she painted her water colors. I am lucky enough to own a few, and many of my friends have received small paintings of French Quarter Scenes that she called her "Daily Bread". When I was struggling with France, buying the house, and just life in general; she was a steady, stable friend, I knew I could count on. She always supported me. She always encouraged me. She shared herself and her wisdom with me like no other. She taught me how to be "the queen in my own life" and the true definition of the word "lovely". I miss Sister Ann.
