With a good things jar of my own that is filling up for 2014, I had to take a peek at my parents's during one of my visits.
I teasingly asked them how their "good things" jar was doing? Mom mentioned that everyone who comes in the room puts something in from time to time. It seems to have become a fun kind of game. I decided to look at a few and found one that my Dad had written: "Sitting outside with Helen in the sunshine."
Funny, my hope was for each of them to find some fun and strength from this simple, little tool to positivity. What I hadn't counted on, was the creation of some sweet, positive moments between my parents. When I read Dad's "good thing" outloud, Mom said: "Oh that's wonderful. You really feel that way, Larry?"
I need to put a "good thing" in their jar on my next trip. "Dad being able to write down his own 'good thing'." Dad had pretty much stopped writing because his hands were so weak. After he finished his physical therapy in the Reach Program in early 2013, he began writing again. For me, it's a lot to be grateful for. It's a good thing!
