...one of the things that has been the hardest about the move of the Tulane School of Social Work from the uptown campus to downtown, has been leaving the grand and spectacular oaks on the grounds of the campus and near the school. I know, I moaned about it too. As you can see here (especially surrounded by all those spring azaleas), spectacular is an understatement.
Coming to the new location of the school for the first time this week; I'd made up my mind to be positive. I've been pleased ever since the location was announced. Now, it's 15 minutes on my bike and just one bus on rainy days. I've gone from a 40 minute bike ride over the Jefferson Davis Overpass to rides of 15-20 minutes down Esplanade, through the Quarter to Canal Street. I've gone from a sometimes two hour bus/streetcar ride on the Esplanade with a transfer to the St. Charles Streetcar, to a 15 minute Esplanade bus ride and short 3 block walk to the school. (And, if the Esplanade bus is way early-I can cross the street and catch the Broad to the Canal Street Streetcar.)
Even though the new location makes my life so much easier in the closeness to home; the beauty and prettiness are of a different kind. It's that urban, city kind of pretty.
I was already missing my oaks and azaleas, when I headed over to take some shots of the head on Elks Place. It wasn't until I got home after all the work and festivities and could look at my photos that I noticed: Look at those oaks! Hmmm, maybe we can find a way to have our cake and eat it too! The wheels are turning!
