Being and doing have been two opposite ends on the life continuum for me. I have had to work very hard to learn to just "be".
It sounds very silly to me now. We are all human "beings". It seems like being should come naturally and be a part of our personal pictures. But I confess, I studied at the knee of the master doer, my Mom. Always being busy has been a comfort to her that has become more difficult as she is aging.
So now when Mom comes for sleepovers with me, I try to have some projects that we can work on together. Last visit, Mom sat with me in the kitchen and she diced my onions for spaghetti sauce and the hard-boiled eggs for potato salad. This visit we returned to onions for the sauce and then, after I filled and rolled the lasagna "roll-ups" she lined them up in the baking dish for me and put the sauce on them. Busy is best for Mom. We talk and share at a positive level.
At one point I said: "I sure hope that my British Passport gets here before I leave for New Orleans." We chatted about it a bit and then, the door bell rang. It was magic! There was the DHL guy with my passport. I so love those moments of synchronicity.
I teased him that he'd made my day.
And...he made my Mom smile!
