Commitment to Workshop Evaluation and Feedback

 

 

I realized this morning, that here I am again...posting two days in a row after such a long dry spell. Not only is there time, but there is so much to write about!

I believe that if you talk the talk, you should walk the walk. 

As you've seen in the past and will continue to see: I stand firm on the importance of measuring success in our profession.

 

How can you SOAR to Success in Social Work,  if you haven't defined success and you have no way to measure it?

I measure  workshop success by:

1) Establishing goals for each workshop;

2) Administering a Pre/Post Test to measure knowledge of content prior to the workshop and at the end of the workshop;

3) Administering a Pre/Post Test to measure skill use currently and projected use post workshop;

4) Administering a Participant Evaluation of the overall workshop, by topical section, presenter and environment; and,

5) Providing feedback on these results to all workshop participants via email.

 

 

Every workshop I offer includes all of the above items, except number three, which is included only when there is a specific skill or behavior I'm interested in looking at. I've used the skill pre/post tests when looking at measuring success with supervisees and when using journaling as a tool in supervision. Needless to say, I have learned a lot myself by doing so.

As you can imagine, the paperwork and accountability can be daunting. I spent all day yesterday completing the evaluation instruments from the workshop: "Social Work Ethics in Changing Times" that wrapped up on the morning of March 31.

Usually, I'm handling 20-25 individual participants, but yesterday's number hit 40. My commitment to this extensive evaluation component, is another reason that I choose to present smaller workshops.

 

On to Measuring Success with Your Supervisees today. I'll be back over the next few days with specific workshop results for each of these two workshops, and also offer some comparisons of the evaluation results between the two venues of presentation.

Exciting Workshop Horizons 2018-NEW ORLEANS

 

As I was getting ready to leave the states earlier this year, I knew that big changes were on the wind for how I offer workshops. I'm sharing this post below with you once more, to wet your whistle for the information I'll be sharing in the upcoming days about the workshops I will be offering at my private office in New Orleans during the last week of January and the first week of February 2018. I am considering these Master Classes and will limit participation to 10 individuals per workshop. Don't miss tomorrow's post!

 

 

April 10, 2017-As I've written here before, I have been offering social work workshops all over the world for a number of years. Most recently, my focus has been in New Orleans and through other institutions and organizations. 

With my life and times about to change, my location and method of workshop presentation may be about to change again too. There are always pros and cons to "workshopping." I'd thought I'd found my "workshop" niche that worked well for me in the long run and short run. As in life, change comes in these arenas too. 

Although it is possible that I will still offer something through other institutions and organizations in the future;

 

I am now going to be focusing on offering workshops again in France AND offering small master classes out of my private office in New Orleans.

Because of the way I offer training, I've learned that it works best for me with smaller groups (25 or less) and a smaller, more comfortable workshop setting. I've found that these factors lead attendees to: participate more; share more; and, enjoy learning from each other. Workshop evaluations reflect those facts. This is my method of choice. 

Stay tuned as future workshop opportunities are developed for France and New Orleans. I'm excited about taking a fresh look at life and "workshopping" from wherever I am in the world!

It has been almost two years since I've written a post on this blog. I'd first initiated it to post social work- related information, books, wisdom, and information on workshops. It seemed that it was becoming more personal and less professional, so I decided to step away from writing here every day. In fact, that turned in to not writing at all.

After wrapping up two workshops yesterday at the Tulane School of Social work, I decided that it's time to resurrect this blog. I will stop by here when I have information to share that is professional in nature, which means that it won't be an every day thing. It may not be an every week or month thing. It's going to be only when there is something professional and appropriate to share. I will still include photos that speak to some shade of the post. We need as much color and beauty in our lives as we can get.

So, on April 1, 2017. I'm back and I'm excited about sharing more with you here that is professional in nature.
